Wostenholm I*XL of Sheffield

CELEBRATED I*XL 10" CALIFORNIA BOWIE KNIFE
A symbol of the 1850's American and Australian gold rushes.
The Californian Bowie - based upon the Wostenholm I*XL knives popular during the Californian gold rush period 1848-60.

Famous I*XL Bowies produced for the  American market were brought by American miners to Australia during the gold rush era of the mid-1800's. Some Australian prospectors, 'forty-niners' who rushed to the Californian gold fields also brought  I*XL style Bowies back to the Australian gold fields. Ironically, in 1851 it was a Californian gold miner, James Esmond, who struck gold at Clunes ( near Ballarat in Victoria) and that triggered the Australian gold rush. The English-made I*XL California Bowie is a relevant symbol relating to both the Amercian and the Australian gold rush link of 150 years (circa 1858.)
Forged from 7/16 inch quality carbon steel into a 10-inch clipped shape blade, the Bowie is thenhardened and tempered before being hand ground and finished by our Sheffield craftsmen. The coffin-shaped handle is fitted to the full-tang of the blade using brass linings and rivets.
The ricasso is die-stamped on the mark-side I*XL SHEFFIELD ENGLAND and on the pile-side G WOSTENHOLM & SON, WASHINGTON WORKS. None are genuine but those marked I*XL
The blade itself is etched CALIFORNIA BOWIE,  with scroll work Geo Wostenholm & Son celebrated.
And of course, in true tradition, each handcrafted Bowie comes complete with its own embossed waxed leather sheath. All made in Sheffield!

EXHIBITION QUALITY I*XL POCKETKNIVES

For 300 years Sheffield has been synonymous with ‘steel & cutlery’ and Wostenholm's I*XL pocketknives are still some of the very best.
Modern hand-crafted and polished pocketknives in popular patterns bearing the world famous ‘IX*L’ trademark, granted by the Cutlers Cutlery of Hallamshire in 1787. Revered all over the United States as the pinnacle of excellence in knife manufacture, George Wostenholm of Washington Works at one time employed 800 people and was arguably England’s greatest cutlery manufacturer.

You may have seen their hand-made working models with satin-finished blades and hardwood handles –  but these are the super-deluxe renditions; stainless blades (2-mm thick), nickel silver bolsters, brass liners & pins, highly decorated handle backs and partially worked blade backs, and featuring a selection of delightful handle scales. And still handcrafted by highly skilled craftsmen in the city of origin to authentic patterns under the original trademark and tradename – it just doesn’t get any better than that!

Feast your eyes and fumble for your wallet – every item is an affordably priced individual objet d’art bearing the best-known brand on the planet. Only while stocks last!
