AKC MAILORDER KNIVES is a division of Matrose Agencies Pty Ltd
in keeping with its established bi-line:

MATROSE AGENCIES: Founded by Keith Spencer in 1978, Matrose Agencies has been a purveyor of bladeware and wholesale supplier since its inception. The firm began importing its own range of knives in 1983, initially from England (H M Slater), then Canada (Grohmann Knives) and America (KaBar Knives), marketing them to Australian resellers as SPENCER IMPORTS (1985-1997).

AKC MAILORDER KNIVES was conceived by Keith Spencer in 1990 to specifically and directly cater for the needs of knife users, makers and collectors. It embodied the Australasian Knife Collectors Club (1990-2011). Almost 10,000 members registered with the AKC Club over a 20 year period until the club wound up in April 2011.

KNIFE SPECIALIST  Keith Spencer has been the Edgemaster columnist in SSAA Australian Shooter magazine since 1988. Keith has also written numerous feature articles on bladeware in SSAA Australian Hunter magazine. He also produced the Blademaster column in Australian Gunsports magazine (1991-95), as well as having articles published in USA magazines Blade, Knives Illustrated, Tactical Knives (premier issue) and Knives Annual book

AKC MAILORDER also embraced Australian Knifemaking Supplies (1992-2012) to import products unavailable in Australia to accommodate the needs of a burgeoning number of knifemakers across the continent.
Keith Spencer self-published two books in two years on knifemakers, Australian Custom Knifemakers 1991 and Australasian Custom Knifemakers 2nd Edition (1992).

AKC PUBLICATIONS & VIDEO PRODUCTIONS: The AKC Mailorder concept shifted up a few notches after Keith Spencer and Joan Renton-Spencer joined hands in 1997. Their first joint effort was the 1999 publication of Edgemaster: 50 Australian Knife Stories, a book on the best Edgemaster articles 1988-98. This was followed shortly thereafter by the release of two videos produced by Joan Renton-Spencer, The Damascus Bladesmith featuring Myron Husiak (Vic) and The Beginners Guide to the Custom Made-Knife featuring David Brodziak (WA), with revised DVD editions issued in 2007.  George Lee Sye, Pioneer of Australian Custom Knifemaking followed in 2013, and Australian and New Zealand Cutlery & Cutlery 1788-1988 was published in 2015.

KNIVES AUSTRALIA  magazine was funded and created by AKC Publications & Video Productions and appeared on newsstands nationwide (2001-2008), and then served as the AKC Club Members official organ (2008-11). Editor: Keith Spencer, Publisher: Joan Renton-Spencer.  Knives Australia magazine wound up April 2011.

Keith and Joan were honoured for their contributions to the Sheffield-Australian cutlery connection when they were invited by the Master Cutler to attend the 371st CUTLER'S FEAST held at Cutler's Hall in Sheffield in 2007.

Keith passed away on 15th July 2015, only two days after seeing his final book, Australian and New Zealand Cutlers & Cutlery 1788-1988  in print.
