It's funny how things stick in your mind. When we were going through the tedious process of trying to get a distributor to put Knives Australia on the newsstands nationwide, a representative of one firm we contacted asked what the intended purpose was for producing a publication on knives.
I replied, "Essentially educational." There was a kind of guffaw on the other end of the phone ... like a "What's there to educate people about knives?" kind of guffaw. Here we go again, I thought, I've got an anti-knife person on the other end of the line! ...
Regular columnist Glenn Waters Actually Mr Nakahata is more than just a Japanese swordmaker. He served his apprenticeship under Mr Nigara (kuni Toshi), who was a famous maker in northern Japan. After becoming a licensed swordmaker, Mr Nakahata travelled to Tokyo to study Togi sword polishing and went on to study Shirasaya sheath making. He is the only sword maker of Japanese swords in the world who is also a sword polisher , sheath maker and engraver ....

Mr Nakahata SwordmakerTim The Toolman Leatherman You know you've made it the world of commerce when the name of the product you've invented becomes the generic name for all those who cashed in on your concept to produce it in umpteen other brands and sell them all over the place.
(in Australia)
Congratulations Tim Leatherman.

Yates photoKarl's Karlis A couple of years ago while on assignment in the Northern Territory I was treated to a splendid demonstration of swordmanship by Karl Jurkijevic, a son of bladesmith Simeon and blade etcher Paulina Jurkijevic. Karle's discipline combines elements of 'mantis' and drunken master' techniques. ...Janine Tanzer - Cutler and Silversmith Victorian Janine Tanzer is a gold and silversmith. Now she can add Art Knifemaking to that list. ....Eric Gillard - Bladesmith
One can only wonder how many hand-forged knives bearing the trademark ECG are scattered around the world. Eric Clifford Gillard is an Australian knifemaker, but because he lives close to the coast in Tasmania, for years tourists and seaman from all over the world have 'just had to have' a Gillard creation.
Eric is revered by long-term knifemakers and contented collectors as the elder statesman of Australian custom knifemaking. He's been there and done that years before the modern generation of knifemakers came on line - and in a few cases, were even born. .....Regular writer Paul Bergen presents: Making movies is big business. Mega multi-million dollar budgets are spent to create the visual imagery that must tell the story. The costs of a single big name actor alone requires anywhere between 20 and 40 million (US) dollars. Production staff, location and technical organisers, cost of wardrobe, film stock, special effects etc. Movie budgets must include everything right down to petty cash items such as transportation, motel accommodation and catering for the extras.Serious SOG Series

Suwandi Wigunadharma is without doubt the fastest assimilator I have every seen into the Australian way of life. Since starting my working life as an apprentice in the WA Railways in 1959 I've met immigrants from all parts of the globe, the two main waves being from Europe after World War II and from Asia after the Vietnam War. Suwandi (known simply to his mates as Wandi) is of Chinese descent but hails from Java and properly immigrated to Oz just a few years ago...
When Whalers Were Around People these days don't argue that banning whaling in this country 34 years ago wasn't the proper thing to do, but back then whaling was part of the pattern of life in Albany, Western Australia.
In fact, one rough night at sea I was pretty thankful for the arrival of a whale chaser that was returning to port after a day spent hunting 40 miles offshore, beyond the continental shelf. I was a young fella then - feeling bulletproof and into adventure - working as a deckhand on a 34-foot fishing boat that long-lined, mainly for sharks. .....Replicated F-S Fighting Knives
