AITOR OF SPAIN  since 1939      Survival knives for when lives are on the line!
The original and genuine Aitor - still manufactured in its country of origin - Spain!

click here for our full range and dedicated AITOR  webpage

Founded in 1939, Aitor initially functioned as a sector cutler and hardware dealer, producing pocketknives (known as the 'red line') plus a few sports knives. The firm evolved into the production of a more refined ‘Green  Line’ range of multi-purpose pocketknives, as well as green-handled survival knives for military and police use.  Aitor's reputation as a prestigious knife manufacturer rapidly spread across Spain and around Europe. Soon, Aitor was servicing an expanding overseas market for their uniquely styled, functionally reliable bladeware.  These days 50% of Aitor products are exported, mainly to neighbouring countries Germany, France and Italy and further afield into Japan, Argentina and the USA.
Aitor utilizes stainless steel that includes in its chemical analysis carbon (inox) 1.50 and chromium 13, which is not dissimilar to 440C stainless bladesteel inclusions, but with better features. Heat treatment (hardening & tempering) is between 56RC & 58RC (Rockwell hardness). Each Aitor blade bears the RC test punch mark as part of the quality control process.

Aitor products have always attracted the attention of Australian outdoor users when made available... and we are pleased to be able to present the following range, ideal for Australian conditions.

    • Tough and dependable efficient bladeware for the serious outdoors knife user.
    • European stainless bladesteel (includes Carbon 1.5, Chromium 13) precisely hardened

    • & tempered (58RC).
    • A Rockwell Hardness test punch mark appears on blades.

  • NATO belt knives (cuchillos)
  • Green Line Pocketknives (navajas multiusos).
  • Military/Civilian Survival knives
  • Bol Machete
  • Aitor ~ pig knife and hatchet  - Olivewood handles.

    MERCATOR of GERMANY
"New Zealand Posssum knife"

This almost indestructible flat and lightweight all-metal Mercator lock-back folder has a 9-cm drop-point carbon blade that can take an excellent edge, will hold it well and can be readily re-honed.

Mercators have ‘skun’ literally millions of  Enzed possums over decades, which makes them ideal for processing soft skinned feral game in Oz. But why should the hunters have all the fun?

Mercators are handy to have around the house and workshop and the toolbox... and these useful folders don’t look out of place on your office desk.

AKC Mailorder:  MK52 : $39.00 plus $8.50 express satchel
A Brief History:
Mercator manufacture stems back to around 1840 when the Berns brothers established the company Gebr. Berns in Konigsmuhle in Solingen, a region of Bergisch Land. They manufactured pocketknives branded Otter-Messer in a very small factory. The fish otters, living in streams and brooks next to the little factory gave rise to the brand name and logo. At that time, only simple and strong pocketknives were produced in many different versions, finished with timber scales, all hand crafted – ground, stropped and polished. The Otter-Messer trademark was first registered in 1847 and the firm later moved to Hohsheid in the heart of Solingen.
In 1989, when Berns closed the company, Mr. Rainer Morsbach took over the Otter trademark and knife production was carried on at Merscheid in Solingen. Hand-made and mainly fitted with carbon-steel blades (code 2003/C75) the expanded range today includes industrial-quality knives for use in households as well as by florists, gardeners, outdoor enthusiasts and in various industries.
Early history also includes the Solingen company Heinrich Von Kaufmann & Sohne Indiawerk, which developed and registered the Mercator style pocketknife about 1867. Over the years the Mercator knife concept has been much copied, but there is only one genuine model, the one with Mercator-Germany stamped onto the back of the strong iron case (handle).
The knives were delivered into the hands of the soldiers of the German Emperor Wilhelm II and gained fame during WW I. In fact, Mercator knives became universally popular because of their sharpness, flatness and easy handling. Multi-bladed Mercators were produced between WWI and WWII and  stamped Mercator-DRGM (Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster). After WWII, the company reverted back to producing only single blade models.
The Kaufmann company closed in 1995 and Mr. Morsbach of Otter-Messer took over the Mercator tradename and perpetuated the production of genuine Mercator (black handle) knives, also known as K55 Cat Knife.

  RETURN OF GREGSTEEL TRADE BLADES

Gregsteel is the popular trademark used by Gregory Steel Products Pty Ltd of Melbourne, the famous Australian manufacturer of cutlery for more than 6 decades. Jim Gregory began the business in 1912 which petered out of existence in the mid 1970’s. During the 1950’s Gregory Steel Products was the largest manufacturer of cutlery products in the Southern Hemisphere. Prior to that they were Australia’s biggest producer of military bladeware (not including bayonets) for Australian and American defence forces serving in Asia and the Pacific Ocean in World war Two.

Often taken for granted was Gregory’s wide range of mass-produced, good quality kitchen knives and trade knives that were used more or less on a daily basis. Admittedly, not as aesthetically exciting as most military and recreational type knives, but nonetheless just as useful when you need the right tool for the right job. In fact, Gregory Steel also supplied thousands of kitchen and trade knives (also tableware) for the war effort bearing the D(broad arrow)D Australian Defence Force (ADF) mark.

The Gregsteel/Gregory Steel Products Trade Mark #711548 in the Register of Trade Marks was registered by Keith Spencer (Australasian Knife Collectors –AKC) since 26 June 1996 and has been applied previously to replications of Australian-made military type knives (Gregsteel Stiletto & Gregsteel Bowie hand-crafted by custom knifemaker Zane Darcy Shaw).

Preparing Gregsteel trade blades for re-entry into the Australian marketplace has been a tedious, long-term project. No factory in this country was either prepared to or capable of manufacturing the Gregsteel patterns to the level of quality demanded and at the price required to re-launch Gregory Steel Products. Because Gregsteel trade blades couldn't be satisfactorily made in Australia, the next best option was to travel back along the lineage to England, Sheffield in particular.

The high carbon bladesteel had to be right, so too the blade shapes, as well as handles securely hafted in the traditional way.
J Adams Ltd was the obvious choice, a long established firm with an impeccable track record for the production of trade blades. Under the tradename of J Nowill, this firm already supplies AKC MAILORDER with trade-type Aussie Rabbiter’s Kits & Bushman’s Kits and Australian Bushknives; faithfully reproduced old practical patterns popularized in Australia – so why not a collaboration on Gregsteel trade blades!

Montauk Point Fillet & Steak System
Two Piece set
Designed by Greg Lightfoot for Timberline Knife & Tool - USA
Matched set of 420 stainless 24-cm blade knives. Flexible 2-mm thick fish filleter & stiff 3-mm thick steak slicer – excellent edges! Sculpted Zytel handle scales with non-slip Kraton inserts – excellent grips! Knives set into a custom-moulded carry case.
A kind of buff ‘n’ barra knife set. Ideal to whip off mackerel fillets with the slim blade and to parcel fillet steaks using the stiff slicer.

What’s in a name?
Mantauk Point is a peninsular about 30-km off the Connecticut coast and is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York State. Montauk Point, named after the Montaukett Indian Tribe indigenous to the area, is particularly famous for its fishing and claims to have more world saltwater fishing records than any other port in the world.
Dutch explorer Adriaen Block encountered the tribe in 1614 at Montauk Point, which he named Hoeck van de Visschers (Point of Fishers) – an obvious site of significance for fishers since time immemorial!  Mantauk Point System knives are manufactured in China to Timberline Knife & Tool specifications. Timberline is a tradename owned by the Great American Tool Company (GATCO-USA) founded in 1989.

    Special big knife design features:
  • The slightly oversize handles can (if required) be quickly & easily customized using a file & sandpaper to suit the user’s hand. Contour for comfort.
  • Angled-down grips ensure the knife is always ‘live’; that is, the working part of the blade is ‘pitched’ forward ready to be activated. Blades with angled-down grips have more ‘follow-through’.

The Cutting Technique
The following technique will maximize cutting efficiency & minimize fatigue.

1.  Firmly grip angled-down handle with forefinger & thumb and loosely grip with three remaining fingers.

2. Cock hand back at the wrist for forward, backward, upward & downward slashes.

3. And finally;
In a relaxed fashion, sweep & direct the working part of the blade (about 12 to 14-cm back from the tip) to the point of focus. At the moment of impact un-cock the wrist & ‘snap’ the three fingers firmly around the handle.

This almost effortless procedure ‘draws’ the blade & provides much impetus to the cutting impact – sometimes referred to as the ‘bite’ of the blade.

A word of warning.
Make sure that you (and others) are safe from the glancing blow of a mis-timed cut. For example, if slashing downwards on your right hand side into hard deadwood, make sure that your right leg is well forward out of the way of a glancing blade. Before doing any cutting job ask yourself, “Is it safe?”

Practice makes perfect
With practice this simple technique can be perfected and a blade swinging rhythm can be achieved - a kind of effortless cutting efficiency that can be sustained for long periods - just like the villagers and field workers of the Indonesian Archipelago.

Blade maintenance. Keep blades sharp and lightly oiled when not in use. Remember, the best way to sharpen a knife is never to allow it to get dull – keep it touched up by stone or steel.

Sole worldwide distribution on SICUT bladeware.

Please note, as of 1 Jan 2010, it is against the law in Western Australia to supply controlled weapons
(including daggers, large bladed machetes... goloks, parangs, klewang, golang, and swords and tantos) to anyone under 18 years of age.
Purchasers of such items are required to provide proof of age.

Grohmann Knives Ltd of Pictou, Nova Scotia - Canada was founded in 1957 and the following year won the design award for the 'Canadian Outdoor Knife', better known as the D.H.Russell Belt Knife.  Deane H Russell, a hunter from Ottawa, created the original award winning design concept upon which most of the range is patterned.

2007: The Original Design's 50th Year !
Limited Edition Anniversary Collector's Knife

Back in 1957 the first D.H. Russell Original Design belt knife was finally elevated from being made on a custom basis into the production stage.  As many collectors know and possess in their collection, the design became a registered trademark in 1958. Each blade of the Original Design was stamped with RD 1958 for the next 20 years.  Now 50 years later they are still being manufactured by the same family in the same town in the same traditional way.  As busy as things are, due to the great amount of loyal customers asking for an anniversary knife, the family is proud to finally introduce this beautiful variation of the original.

This anniversary version will be available for a limited time only. Even though Grohmann Knives are classified as production knives, there can be as few as two craftsmen creating your knife from start to finish in as many as 53 steps.  Beautifully figured exhibition grade Arizona Ironwood scales have been chosen for their rich colours and diversity. Handmade mosaic designer pins with various designs and styles take the place of the middle brass rivet.  The 50th Anniversary logo is electro-etched onto the blade and gold foiled on the high grade hand stitched leather sheath. Each anniversary knife is different and unique for you and comes in the classic black and gold foil gift box with the Grohmann Limited Lifetime Warranty. Your own piece of history.

GJK:  "Golang" - British Jungle Blade
British military prototype. Similar in essence to the Parang that appears in the British SAS handbook, which is actually a hybrid of a South East Asian Golok (primarily a chopper) and a Parang (primarily a slasher) - so we named it a Golang.  Now we note that the name has gone world-wide!
The Golang utilises the best of both worlds being able to chop as well as slash with equal efficiency. This is a serious wilderness big-blade!

  • Scabbard: black canvas sheath

Manufactured exclusively by Samuel Staniforth Ltd - Sheffield under contract to Jordania

JORDANIAN ARAB ARMY KNIFE:
for professional users and discriminating collectors

Whilst the Jordanian Arab Army Knife is produced at the Smithfield Works of Samuel Staniforth Ltd at Sheffield in England, the unique knife concept clearly originates in the Middle East. Patterned after the style of a traditional Arabic Jambiya, its initial production was close-monitored by a Jordanian Sheikh to ensure that the knife’s specifications would fulfill its intended purpose.

Samuel Staniforth Ltd at Smithfield Works of Sheffield in England was selected by the Jordanian's to manufacture this official jambaya.
Samuel originated the cutlery manufacturing firm in 1864 in the city of Sheffield, which at that time was the world’s foremost steel and cutlery producing centre, backed up by a knife making history that stretched back to 1604. Staniforth’s current owner, Chris Hopkinson, knew exactly what was required and precisely how to do it. The product is perfectly practical and superbly presented. A faithful new generation production of the original ‘Arab Knife’ adapted for modern-day military usage.

The Arab writing on the blade means nothing more sinister than  "ARAB ARMY".  This text goes back to the days of Lawrence of Arabia and his Arab army, of which the Jordanians or the Hashemite kingdom as it was, made up the bulk of the troops along with the Saudis"

Of much more significance is the inclusion on the handle of the Jordanian Royal Crest, which ordinarily only appears on those knives issued to soldiers of the Jordanian defence force. At the request of the AKC via Staniforths, the Jordanian Government, after a lot of consideration, eventually granted permission for the AKC to distribute a limited number of Arab Army Knives bearing the Royal Crests, mainly for the purpose of selling them to discerning knife collectors in this country.

The crest represents King Abdullah II, the Head of State, who with the assistance of a Prime Minister rules and governs Jordan. "Mosheer" - Filed Marshall - is the highest military rank and the commander-in-chief of the military. This rank is reserved for the King, or in very rare cases, some of the heads of joint chiefs of staff that had remarkable achievements. The crest is portrayed by two Arabic swords crossing with a crown above them, with  two wheat plants around them along with other decorative signs.

It is worth reiterating the King’s own words to the world after Jordan’s Hyatt Days Inn and Radisson hotels in the capital Amman were shattered by three al-Qaeda suicide bombers in November 2005.
Heretics of Islam... terrorism is a sick and cross-border phenomenon.
Therefore, eradicating it is the whole world’s responsibility.”

    A Brief History:
The emergence of the Jambiya in the Jordanian region is buried in the mists of history, however, the distinct design evolved into a symbol of the Arab kingdom hundreds of years ago. Located on the Jordan River nearby the Mediterranean Sea, the country of Jordan contains historic ruins of early civilization, including the ancient remains of the Greek and Roman city of Jarash, the Nabataean city of Petra and the crusader castles at Al Karak and Ajlun.
Although under Israeli control since 1967, Biblical places west of the Jordan River - Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron and Jericho and the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found - are also located in Jordan. It is believed that mankind established one of the first settlements in the history of the world at Jericho in 8000BC – Jericho may even be the oldest city in the world.
During the Bronze Age (3000-1100BC) four small states developed east of the Jordan River, one of them being Ammon, which is now the name of Jordan’s capital city. The Hebrew states of Judah and Israel developed on the west side (west bank) of the Jordan and the Philistines held the land along the Mediterranean Sea. Later, the Assyrians, Chaldeans, Egyptians and Persians would invade and control the region.
Alexander the Great conquered most of Jordan in 332BC and after he died, Jordan was governed by two rulers calling themselves Ptolemies in the south and Seleucids in the north. In 63BC the Romans conquered Jordan and presided over the region during the introduction and spread of Christianity. The Arab conquest, Muslims from the Arabian Peninsular, captured Jordan in AD636, thus spreading the influence of Islam in the region. Jerusalem had become a city of religious significance for followers of both Christian and Islamic faiths.
Christian crusaders from Europe conquered Jerusalem in 1099. Then, after further crusades, the Marmalukes of Egypt eventually drove the crusaders away and ruled Jordan until 1517, when the Ottoman Turks defeated them. The Ottomans ruled most of the Middle East for about 400 years, although few Turks settled in Jordan, which meant the Arab people maintained their language and customs.
During World War One (1914-18) Saudi Arabia defeated the Turks in Jordan with more than a little help from a British Army intelligence officer stationed in the region; Thomas Lawrence – better known now as the famous ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. After the Great War the League of Nations placed Palestine (west bank of the Jordan River) and Jordan (east bank) under a British mandate. Jordan became an emirate (territory) under an emir (king) and the territory was called Transjordan, functioning under a form of independence.
Unrest prevailed in the area between Arabs and Jews relating to perceived land entitlements based upon historic and religious backgrounds. In 1947 Britain asked the United Nations to help settle the conflict. In 1948 the British mandate expired and the Jews established the state of Israel on the land assigned to them under the United Nations plan. Fighting broke out between the Israelis and adjoining Arab states over disputed land ownership in 1949, which resulted in Israel doubling the size of its country. In 1950, Transjordan changed its name to Jordan. Disputes continued and in 1967 Israel defeated Jordan, Egypt and Syria in a six-day war and seized the west bank of Jordan and placed Jerusalem city under Israeli rule. Arab-Israeli unrest still exists in the region.
One thing has remained unchanged throughout all this, the Jambiya knife, being both a ceremonial symbol synonymous with Arabs and a weapon of offence or defence should the need arise. Not surprisingly, a variant of the traditional Jambiya is utilised by the Jordanian Arab Army personnel and who better to have manufacture this combat-survival style knife than the Brits, Jordan’s old allies since the days of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’?

    MAGNUM SHARPENING STEEL
    F.DICK MULTICUT STEEL

Manufactured by Friedr Dick GmbH & Co of Deizisau in Germany.
Promoted as being several steels in one, the Multicut Model 6504 is a heck of a hunk of sharpening equipment to have around the house or camp site. It not only restores the cutting edge (apply light pressure), but also extends the re-grinding intervals (apply heavy pressure).
The 28-cm (11-inches) long fistful of steel has longitudinal grooves that divide the steel into several sections, providing a fine surface on which the knife edge can be restored and smoothed by steeling lightly. The edges of the grooves are so designed that they have a grinding effect and take the shoulder of the edge back when steeling a blunt knife using extra pressure.

This flat (slightly elliptical) steel has an advantage over round steels in that it straightens and smooths the cutting edge of a knife faster and more gently by providing a ‘line of contact’ rather than a ‘point of contact’ to the edge. Also, the alternating steeling strokes bend the cutting edge less back and forth on the flat Multicut surface than on a regular round steel.

The Multicut has an advantage over oilstones, inasmuch as it saves time maintaining a sharp cutting edge and edge shoulder and is readily on hand (can be carried on the belt), whereas carrying an oilstone and honing oil is more cumbersome.

They say the best way to keep a knife sharp is never to allow it to get blunt - the F. Dick Multicut sharpening steel provides a quick and efficient way of keeping your working knife in shaving-sharp order.

A very portable, superbly engineered sharpening tool.
